The initial cost of a database platform usually exceeds that of a spreadsheet program like Excel, Numbers and Google Sheets.  Therefore, if starting with your favorite  spreadsheets program makes more sense in the beginning, you can always move up to a database later.  In the meanwhile, you can create a database of sorts with a spreadsheet.
